Picos de Europa II, Spain

Free roaming horses, hike Liegos

We’re currently traveling in the autumnal Picos de Europa. I’ve met up with my campervan friend Pamela and we’re enjoying this amazing mountain range in northern Spain.

Cangas de Onís

After visiting the Covadonga Basilica, we spend the night in Cangas de Onís with its old Roman bridge. It’s a charming town with many restaurants, terraces, and shops. There’s also a riverside path perfect for walking the dog. A beautiful area!

Desfiladero de los Beyos gorge

We travel further south on the N-625 road. This route takes us through the Desfiladero de los Beyos gorge. WOW, this route is stunning! I wind along the asphalt road through the gorge, along the high cliffs. The road is a bit narrow, but still manageable with the campervan. We stop for a coffee in the small, old village of Oseja de Sajambre.

Mountain pass

We cross the Puerto de El Pontón mountain pass at an altitude of 1280 meters. Brrr, the wind is freezing! I’m still in my shorts, take some photos and quickly move on.

Hike Liegos (Acebedo)

A nice overnight stay in a natural spot in Liegos, a hamlet. Pamela and I hike up the mountain until we come across a herd of free roaming horses. There’s also a small shed belonging to a shepherd or farmer.

Once again a stunning scenery, we’ve already seen so much beauty in Picos de Europa. We’ve only just returned when it starts to rain. We’ve a drink in the camper with Pamela and a nice chat about our wonderful trip.

New village Riaño

Riaño is a new village, as the old village is submerged in the large water reservoir. The same old stones were used to rebuild some of the houses. There’s an island in the blue lake and long bridges are worth a visit.

Hike Riaño

This is a perfect area for taking photos! But also for a long walk. The weather isn’t great, a constant drizzle, but we keep walking and don’t get cold. It’s a wooded area with old, crooked trees and a viewpoint halfway along the route.

For the first time, I see brown cows with blond downy hair. At the top of the hill, we have a truly amazing and unique view. The sun shines directly on the blue lake, incredible!

One more walk through the village, I look at the various churches and sit for a moment on the most beautiful bench in the Leon region!

We had a wonderful time in the Picos de Europa! The driving in the mountains is fantastic and we enjoyed our hikes very much. Tomorrow we’re heading to Portugal, our first stop: Peneda-Gerês National Park.

TIP: Fill up in Spain before you go! Petrol and diesel prices are much lower in Spain.

Curious about our trip to Portugal? Please be patient, this blog is currently being created.
